Sail On

Sail On

Plus a look at Sail On, almost a decade later!

The ship has sails, and it has a rudder.

The winds cannot be predicted or controlled. The tide cannot be harnessed. The waves will do as they will.

But the sails can be trimmed, or even taken down entirely. And the rudder exists for steering.

Control what you can; don’t lament what you can’t.

Ever onward.

What the Heck is Sail On Supposed to Be About, Anyway???

I confess that I have absolutely no idea. When I first wrote this post almost 10 years ago, I suppose I felt I was being poetic. And, perhaps, I felt as if I was being inspirational. Or at least comforting.

But right now, it just looks, well, weird.

Should I pull it? I have been wondering about that.

Maybe I should. But then you would not be treated to my ruminations on my decade-past self.

Also known as, what the f*** was I thinking?

So, Why is it Still Here, After All These Years?

Right now, it is more or less an exercise in search engine optimization. Can I salvage even a silly, inadequately worded post such as this one?

God only knows what it would rank on. I suspect, well, nothing.

And egad, that poem or inspirational bit is just a festival of passive voice. And so there are plugins which are giving me a bit of grief about that.

Therefore, this is another reason why I am blathering on right now. Because about all I can really do about it, apart from rewriting it completely, is to drown it with active voice sentences.

Here is a poem. At least, I believe it to be a poem. But it may very well not be. And, in the meantime, here are a bunch of active voice sentences to take a two by four to the passive.

Oh and that external link? It is to a page about a professor I had at BU. George Starbuck was a poet and a good guy, as I remember him.

Takeaways

I don’t even honestly know if there are any takeaways from this. No, wait, I’ve got one!

When you are first starting out as a blogger, ignore your weirder impulses. Because, if you stay as a blogger, then I can fairly well guarantee to you that you will come across posts like this. You’ll scratch your head and wonder who that person was.
